Journal 53: Interview with Blanca Suelves y María Chávarri
Blanca Suelves is a prominent figure in the Spanish social and professional scene. In 2025, she has begun a new chapter alongside her cousin and friend María Chávarri, with whom she has founded Roberta Flat, a business project dedicated to helping organize and put homes in order after moves, offering a discreet and tasteful service.
How did this project come about?
“Roberta Flat arises from the stage of life we are in; both of us wanted to keep working and to start something of our own. It’s a small venture that could become a platform toward other possibilities.”
How would you define your personal style of organizing and decorating?
“We want to organize homes with common sense and without extravagant methods. We seek simplicity and practicality, but we start by listening to each client’s wishes and then adapt to them or advise what we ourselves would do. It’s a team effort, if that’s what they want, or we solve what they propose, if that’s their preference.”
What challenge has surprised you the most since founding the business?
“There are no surprises — only the difficulty that comes with starting any business is a challenge. But we are convinced that having people you trust, who are responsible when it comes to something as personal as a move, helps to experience that process in a far less stressful way.”
How important are shoes in your daily life?
“Blanca — “I give them maximum importance. They are the treat I indulge in most willingly.”
María — “I start dressing with the shoes, so that says it all…”
What place in the world would you like to visit wearing your friulane shoes?
“They are essential on any trip. They fit well into the suitcase, are beautiful, comfortable, and always add a special touch.”
What are your favorite book and hotel?
“Blanca — “My favorite hotel is the Hotel du Palais in Biarritz. I don’t have a favorite book nor am I much of a reader, but I’d name these three: The Eyes of the Eternal Brother by Stefan Zweig, Siddhartha by Hermann Hesse, and The Russian Pilgrim (Anonymous).”
María — “Love in the Time of Cholera and One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel García Márquez. And my favorite hotels are any of those in the AMAN chain.”
What would you like to change in society’s perception of home organization, moving and domestic order thanks to your project Roberta Flat?
“To be able to work on projects that choose to include us and see us as part of a process — much like architects and decorators; Roberta Flat brings order after the move. And that’s a real luxury!”
