Journal 60: Interview with María de León
María de León is a writer, communicator, and leading figure in personal branding and lifestyle in Spain. With a solid track record in the field of communication, she has become an influential voice on topics such as well-being, personal development, and meaningful living.
María de León is a communication specialist, writer, and social responsibility project entrepreneur.
You began your career in communication when the digital environment did not yet exist as we know it today. What were those early years like, and what motivated you to commit to such an undefined path at the time?
“It was a challenging moment because, with little knowledge of the digital field and how social media worked, you needed a mindset of continuous learning. For me, this was fun, considering that I’m curious and love taking on new challenges that help me evolve personally and professionally. I always say that the best school in life is experience, not memorizing theory. I confirmed this years later, when different educational institutions began launching training programs in this field and I decided to develop a special program on digital communication at Inesdi Business Techschool.
I discovered that what I had done, guided by common sense, was actually well oriented.
What pushed me to pursue this area was the proposal journalist Josefina Figueras made to me in 2008 to start my own blog on her website “Asmoda.” And also the fact that, that same year, Mercedes Urrea (then director of hola.com) suggested that I cover the “Madrid Fashion Week” shows live on Twitter.”
Vestir con Estilo marked a turning point in your career. What motivated you to write it?
“I wrote Vestir con Estilo in 2012 after seeing the great demand for consultations that came to the online style advice section I opened on my website (www.marialeonstyle.com). I wanted to create a timeless manual that gathered all the information on how to dress for different situations in everyday life.
It was a success because I sold many copies, but I would say that my real personal transformation is better reflected in my second book, Vivir con Sentido, which I published last year (April 2025).
Thirteen years separate the two publications, and they reflect the enriching personal journey I have experienced—one that has taken me from the exterior to the interior.
This led me to refocus the purpose of my work, and now I develop my communication work from a humanistic and social responsibility perspective.”
How do you choose the topics you write or speak about today?
“I choose them based on what personally moves me and sparks an inner reflection that I feel should be shared with the public. I usually choose current topics and contribute my own perspective.”
Your greatest professional learning?
“Working connected to your purpose is what ensures you never lose motivation or the strength to keep going. You have to overcome many setbacks along the way.”
What parallels do you see between artisanal creation and your process of writing and communication?
“Writing and communicating are forms of artistic expression. They are creative exercises that help you bring your soul out into the open so you can share it with others. The medium is words and language. It’s also an exercise that requires a lot of introspection, authenticity, and courage. This is not easy. I truly enjoy it.”
What place in the world would you like to explore wearing your friulanes?
“For me, this footwear is ideal for enjoying ‘chic’ places rich in art. I would wear them in Italy (Rome, Venice, Milan…), Paris, Istanbul, Morocco…”
What would your perfect Cayumas be like?
“It’s hard for me to choose because they’re all ideal!
Perhaps I would choose the leopard-print Pagliacci to add a feline and distinctive touch to my looks.”
