Journal 50: Interview with Morgan Duram

Journal 50: Entrevista a Morgan Duram

Morgan is an American content creator living in Madrid. She became known on social media as @morganinspain for her entertaining and relatable content about cultural differences between the United States and Spain, making her a popular voice on Instagram and TikTok.

What originally motivated you to move to Spain and start documenting your life on social media from here?
“I originally moved to Spain because I met my Spanish husband while we were both studying in the US. After graduating and living all over the States, we realized we were craving a different pace of life - and he also felt the pull to be closer to his family. Spain just felt like the natural next step for us.

I began documenting and sharing my journey because I genuinely fell in love with Spain and its culture. As an American, so many of the lifestyle differences were surprising in the best way, and I had a feeling others would find them just as interesting and entertaining as I did. Sharing those moments became a way to connect, learn, and hopefully make others smile along the way.”

How would you describe the biggest culture shock you experienced when you arrived in Spain?
“Honestly, there were quite a few culture shocks at first - from the meal schedules, to the slower pace of life, to the beautiful art of sobremesa. But the biggest surprise for me was just how social everyone is. In Spain, people are always out - meeting friends, chatting on terraces, filling the streets and restaurants at all hours.

As an introverted American, it definitely took me time to adjust. But a few years later, I’ve grown to really appreciate how much Spaniards prioritize relationships and community. It’s changed me in the best way, and now I feel like I have more friends and deeper friendships than ever.”

What do you think about the responsibility that comes with influencing people—especially when dealing with issues of culture, integration, adaptation... as a foreigner living in Spain?
It’s a responsibility I take seriously, and one I’ve learned to navigate - sometimes gracefully, sometimes through trial and error. Sharing my life in Spain and inspiring others to travel or live abroad brings me so much joy, but it’s something that that should be done respectfully and thoughtfully.

With the growing conversations around tourism, migration, and housing in Spain, I understand why many locals feel protective of their culture and communities. As immigrants, I believe we have a responsibility to approach our new home with humility - doing our due diligence, respecting the people who live here, and making an effort to integrate and adapt. It’s about celebrating a place while honoring the people who make it what it is.”

Do you have any personal projects outside of social media?
“I always have a few side projects in the works - I love creating and dreaming up what’s next. Right now, though, my main focus is embracing the slower Spanish lifestyle and working on personal goals: improving my Spanish, focusing on my family and loved ones, and continuing to build my brand in a way that feels authentic and sustainable.”

What role does craftsmanship play in your daily life?
“Craftsmanship is something I deeply appreciate in my everyday life. Moving to Spain really opened my eyes to the beauty of things made with intention, tradition, and care. Whether it’s a handmade ceramic cup I use each morning or a thoughtfully made pair of shoes, surrounding myself with well-crafted pieces adds a sense of meaning and connection to my routine. It reminds me to slow down, value quality over quantity, and honor the work of the people behind the things I use and wear.”

How important are shoes in your daily life?
As someone who walks everywhere, shoes are absolutely essential. There’s nothing worse than an uncomfortable pair slowing you down. For me, it’s not just about comfort - it’s also about feeling polished and confident. A well-made pair of shoes that’s both comfortable and timeless becomes a true staple in your wardrobe, and it makes everyday life so much easier and more enjoyable.”

Where in the world would you like to travel with your Friulian shoes on?
“I would love to wear my Friulans while wandering through the busy streets of New York. There’s something beautiful about pairing a thoughtfully crafted, elegant shoe with the energy and chaos of the city. It feels like the perfect balance of refinement and adventure.”
