Journal 57: Interview with Susana Cruz

Journal 57: Entrevista a Susana Cruz

Susana Cruz is a Spanish designer and founder of Suma Cruz, a handmade jewelry and accessories brand renowned for its unique creative universe. Her work stands out for its maximalist aesthetic inspired by nature and for her approach to jewelry as a protagonist element.

SUMA CRUZ has a very recognizable and emotional universe. Do you remember the exact moment when you felt you had found your own creative language?
“I’ve never been consciously aware of having a language of my own, but it’s true that since I was little I’ve had my own references, which have evolved into what they are today.”

In an industry where fast production is the trend, you stand up for time, detail, and craftsmanship. What sacrifices and rewards has choosing that path brought you?
“As for sacrifices, it’s terrible when you compare yourself to other brands that work in fast fashion… in fact, many times it makes you doubt yourself. But then I look inward and think about what I like and what I want, and my strength comes back. Of course this path is very demanding, a lot, but it’s also honest and beautiful.
If we talk about rewards… following your intuition and doing things the way you want, outside of established standards, is a real pleasure and gives you much more freedom—and I’d even dare say, more happiness too.”

A recurring artistic reference?
“Lemony Snicket and Tim Walker.”

The most difficult piece you’ve ever created?
“If I stop to think about it… the most difficult piece was the first time I faced making a piece of jewelry. It was an abyss. It was the ferns. Every time I step out of my comfort zone it’s a challenge. But I like challenges—they make you grow.”

What place in the world would you like to explore wearing your friulanes?
“Anywhere in Africa, as it is the epicenter of all my creations.”

How important are shoes in your day-to-day life?
“Completely. Footwear is extremely important. Quality and comfort are essential, since we spend practically the whole day on our feet.”

How would you design your perfect Cayumas?
“I think we should do a collaboration—and then you’d see my ‘perfect Cayumas’!!!!!!!”
