Journal 70: Interview with María Santos

Journal 70: Entrevista a María Santos

María Santos is an interior designer from Madrid who has established herself as one of the leading figures in contemporary design in Spain. As the founder of her own studio, she has built a career centered on creating elegant, timeless, and meticulously crafted spaces.

How do you define the balance between aesthetics and functionality in a project?
For me, aesthetics and functionality should never compete. A beautiful space that isn’t comfortable to live in loses its meaning, while a purely practical one can feel soulless. The balance comes when every decision — from the layout to the materials — responds both to a real need and to an emotion.

Many of the homes you design convey a sense of calm. What elements do you consider essential to achieve that feeling?
Calm comes from coherence. I like working with natural light, noble materials, soft tones, and spaces that can breathe. It’s also important to avoid excess — allowing each piece to have its own presence and creating an atmosphere that invites you to slow down.

What role does craftsmanship play in your projects?
It’s essential! It’s what gives character and sets a great project apart. Craftsmanship is the true luxury today.

One essential element in your interiors?
A beautiful palette of colors and textures. Quality fabrics and soothing tones that bring peace.

What place in the world would you love to explore wearing your friulanes?
This weekend, I’m planning to explore Tuscany wearing them!

How important are shoes in your daily life?
They are essential. I spend many hours on my feet, on-site, so I need to feel comfortable. But at the same time, shoes can complete a look, so for me they are very important.

How would you design your perfect Cayumas?
I would design a thousand of them, because they are the kind of shoes that go with everything!
