Journal 69: Interview with Sara Galindo
Sara Galindo is an entrepreneur and a leading figure in Latin American fashion. She is best known for her time as executive editor of ELLE Mexico. Her work is distinguished by its focus on promoting cultural identity through design, making her a key figure in understanding the evolution and global reach of fashion in Mexico.
What role do you think social media plays in how fashion is consumed today?
“Social media has democratized fashion in a way we’ve never seen before. Today, anyone can discover a brand, an artisan, or a designer from anywhere in the world. That’s extraordinary.
But it has also led us toward much faster and more fleeting consumption. That’s why I believe people are now returning to pieces with history, authenticity, and soul. We no longer just want to look good; we want to feel a connection with what we wear.”
How do you see the future of Mexican fashion on the global stage?
“I see enormous potential. Mexico has one of the most powerful cultural and artisanal identities in the world. The real challenge now is transforming that richness into global brands with vision, structure, and a strong narrative.
I believe true Mexican luxury lies precisely in our authenticity, in our hands, and in our ancestral techniques.”
Who do you admire professionally?
“I admire women who use their voice, intelligence, and influence to create a real impact on humanity. Women who understand that true success isn’t measured only in power or recognition, but in the ability to transform lives.
From figures like Melinda French Gates or Oprah Winfrey, to women who, from quieter spaces, preserve culture, build community, and help give dignity and a future to others.”
What connects you to craftsmanship?
“Craftsmanship connects me to the most human side of a culture—to time, memory, patience, and the dignity of handmade work.
Behind every piece, there are entire generations preserving a technique and an identity. In an increasingly fast and disposable world, craftsmanship reminds us of the importance of slowing down and truly seeing.”
How important are shoes in your daily life?
“Very. I believe shoes have the power to completely transform a person’s energy.
For me, they represent a blend of aesthetics and real life: sophistication, comfort, and personality all at once.”
Which place in the world would you like to explore wearing your friulane?
“Venice. Friulane have something deeply poetic and quiet that perfectly matches that city. I imagine myself walking slowly through bookstores, cafés, and palaces full of history.
I think that today, true luxury is precisely about that: time, calm, and the ability to contemplate beauty.”
