Journal 75: Interview with Pablo Galán

Journal 75: Entrevista a Pablo Galán

Pablo Galán, one of the creative minds behind the aesthetic universe of Philippa1970. A Spanish designer with a sensibility deeply rooted in color, travel, and craftsmanship, Galán has built a brand known for its blend of relaxed sophistication, bohemian influences, and attention to detail.

Philippa1970 has a very distinctive aesthetic. What part of the creative process do you enjoy the most, and what do you find the most challenging?

“The part I enjoy the most is working with the fabric before it becomes something concrete. There is a conversation that happens between the material and the hand, before it has taken the shape of a garment. The most difficult part is the in-between stage: when it is no longer just an idea, but not yet an object.”

Craftsmanship seems to play an important role in Philippa1970’s philosophy. Do you think fashion can still convey memory and craftsmanship?

“Absolutely. A handmade garment carries with it the time of the person who made it, the land from which the material comes, and the tradition that precedes it. Industrialized fashion has erased much of that narrative, but there is something in the touch of a handcrafted piece that the body instinctively recognizes.”

Three designers who inspire you?

“Halston
Valentino
Stefano Pilati”

A hotel and a book you always recommend?

“Hotel: Rajmahal Jaipur, India
Book: At the Emperor’s Table, written by Valentino”

What place in the world would you most like to explore while wearing your Friulane shoes?

“Japan, because it is a country where detail is not merely an accessory. I am interested in walking through places where people understand that the way something is made matters just as much as what is being made.”

How would you design your perfect Cayumas?

“I would draw inspiration from Indian embroidery and craftsmanship to create a pair of Cayumas with a distinct identity. I am interested in combining the richness of traditional techniques with a contemporary vision, resulting in a unique, elegant piece with a strong artisanal value, fully aligned with the essence of Philippa1970.”
